Western Stima recorded their first win in five matches after dimming title favourites Tusker FC 1-0 in the SportPesa Premier League (KPL) week 16 clash staged at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Friday.
The hosts, who have not had the best of seasons so far, showed more hunger to end their plight, knocking on the champions’ door more in the opening exchanges.
By the 20th minute, their relentless efforts in the final third had Tusker right-back Collins Shivachi yellow carded for a foul on Ezekiel Otuoma. Ugandan import Oromchan Villa would come close two minutes later but fluffed his one on one opportunity with Duncan Ochieng in the Tusker goal. Seven minutes later Oromchan made amends for his earlier miss by slotting home at the far post past a stunned Ochieng.
Having made a solo run on Stima’s right, the lanky forward cut inside to power in the opener as the clock ticked to just half an hour played. Stima were the first to ring changes as Otuoma paved way for another speedy forward John Oruko.
Tusker then responded by bringing in Allan Wanga in place of Michael Khamati in a bid to reinforce the attack. Wanga added the much needed punch for the brewers and for most part after the hour mark, Fred Shimonyo and Maurice Ojwang were busy center-halves.
Tusker then threw in their last card in Tanzanian Hassan Abdul for David Mwangi with the latter completely out of legs towards the closing stages but Stima held on to not only end their slump but condemn Tusker to a is cond straight loss, coming from the 0-1 loss at the hands of Bandari.
Meanwhile, 2010 champions Ulinzi Stars face an unpredictable Nakumatt side in the first league match to be aired live since television channel Bamba signed a broadcast deal with the league organisers.
A lot will be at stake in the 2pm kick-off match which can go either way going by the form of the two teams. Posta Rangers stalk new-comers Nzoia Sugar at Tusker Village in Ruaraka in yet another match that should keep fans on the edge of their seats. Nzoia Sugar are reputed as good travellers and are by and large expected to give Rangers quite a hard time.
