The roller coaster of siblings Sheil and Sneha Kotecha pressed on Friday as they booked final berths yesterday at the ITF Junior Championships held at Nairobi Club. In what has been a sensational run, both players showed character and strength as they easily dismantled their opponents.
Top seed Sheil was once again in aggression mode as he sought to put out the flame of his opponent in a 6-4,6-3 win over Ahmad Feroz of Morocco under fine weather. His opponents failing to close out easy points and making tons of forced errors thereby executing winners inspired Sheil.
Ahmad had himself to blame for having little consistency when it mattered and the surface was also affecting his mobility. However, the Britam Kenya Open finalist did just enough to douse the opponent. His backhands were difficult to deal with as he bombarded the other side of the court with big shots and sleeky skills that wowed the onlookers.
Feroz also got points after some dutiful play when Sheil uncharacteristically slackened. His speed on the spin and forehand shots caught the home favourite difficult time.
Sheil had to dig deep to find reaction and patience to execute favourably. As for Sneha who has the prestigious honour of being the current Africa Junior Masters Champion, she ran out 6-3, 7-5 victor over Cote d’Ivoire’s Maria Yetunde with her main weapon of promise being her confidence on the serve and excellent defences. – BARRY SILAH
