Kericho County spends Sh15m on stadium facelift

Kericho County Government has so far spent Sh15 million to improve the state of the Kericho Green Stadium and availing of sports facilities. Chief Officer (CO) in charge of Sports, Youth Affairs, Culture and Education Bernard Korir said the county government is committed to giving the stadium a facelift to the national and international standards.

Korir said the county administration is set to expand some facilities such as establishing of volleyball pitches, pole vault area, handball and netball pitches besides Hammer Throw cage among others.

“There’s an area of the stadium which has been lying idle and are we set to utilise it by putting additional facilities that we will be used by sportsmen and women plus upcoming ones in a bid to take sports to the next level,” said Korir.

He said students learning at the various institutions of higher learning within Kericho Town lack place for extra curriculum activities saying with the availing of such facilities at the stadium, they will breathe a sigh of relief.

“Sports is a million dollar sector in the country and we’re out to take to the next level,” Korir said, football pitch was almost complete with the necessary facilities saying recently Football Kenya Federation had given the stadium a clean bill of health and it is currently the home ground for Zoo Kericho FC which is plying their trade in the SportPesa Premier League.

The CO disclosed that construction of the outer perimeter wall and the inner one has already been completed at the stadium saying it has already been identified as one of the major stadiums in Kenya.

Korir further said his department is exploring possibilities of allocating additional funds for construction of more modern stands, bathrooms, toilets and changing rooms within the stadium and security barrier within the perimeter wall.
