Umoja plot Co-op Bank raid in KBF tie

High-riding men basketball Premier League side Umoja have a tough encounter against six-time champions Co-operative Bank Spartans at the Nyayo Stadium Gymnasium Saturday with both teams keen to consolidate their positions in the leading pack.

Umoja has defied their rookie status in the top tier league to climb second on the table behind leaders Ulinzi Warriors with 26 points, three shy off the leaders while Co-operative are ranked third with 25 points.

A win for Umoja will see them strengthen their tally to 28 points but anything short of victory will see them slump to position three as their opponents move second with 27 points.

Cooperative is coming from their last weekend loss against champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) but they are still favourites ahead of their Sunday encounter in which they hope to register their twelfth victory of the season.

Self-sponsored Umoja are no push-overs in the league despite having lost six matches and the bankers coach Carey Odhiambo must be wary of the Nairobi Eastlands who dented Ulinzi unbeaten run a fortnight ago. In other matches, Ulinzi will take on ninth-placed Trailblazers whose run has dipped significantly and precariously dangling one position above the relegation zone with 19 points from 15 matches.

Champions KPA will face off students Kenya College of Accountancy (KCA-U) Nairobi City Thunder battle it out against Equity Bank men. Both KPA and Thunder are tied on points at position six after bagging 21 points while Equity is ranked eighth with 20 points.

United States International University-Africa (USIU-A) Tigers play bottom-placed Zetech University Titans as they hope to leapfrog Strathmore Blades to fourth place since the two sides are separated by a single point.

Zetech will face Lions in their second match of the weekend at Nyayo with both teams desperate to evade relegation axe. In the women Premier League, leaders KPA have an easy encounter against struggling Western Delights at Nyayo while champions Equity Bank Hawks takes on students Kenyatta University Oryx.

A win for KPA will extend their unbeaten run 12 matches with maximum 24 points as Equity eyes their 11th victory of the season which will also earn them 20 points on log behind rivals KPA.

Third-placed Co-operative Bank Kingdom Queens have date with ninth-placed Eagle Wings while Zetech who area raked sixth locks horns with Storms. Former champions USIU-Africa Flames have a tricky fixture against fellow students Strathmore Swords with both teams locked on a 15-point tie at position four from 10 matches each.
