Opinion poll puts Oparanya, Buzeki ahead in gubernatorial race

Governor Wyclifee Oparanya and debutant Bundotich Zedekiah Kiprop are the front-runners in the Kakamega and Uasin Gishu in the for their respective gubernatorial contests, an opinion poll released on Friday says.

According to the survey, Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago and Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale would both lose in their quest for the Governor’s seat if elections were held now.

The Infotrak Research and Consulting findings released place Kiprop – popularly known as Buzeki- Uasin Gishu governorship independent candidate at 54.2 per cent ahead of incumbent Mandago of Jubilee Party whose popularity reportedly stands at 42.1 per cent.

In Mombasa, outgoing Governor Hassan Ali Joho of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is said to be the favourite with 63 per cent support, followed by Jubilee Party’s Suleiman Shahbal with 15.3 per cent.

Senator Hassan Omar of Wiper comes a distant third at 4.8 per cent, while Nyali MP Hezron Awiti of the Vibrant Democratic Party enjoys a paltry three per cent backing.

Kakamega’s Oparanya of ODM leads with 68.3 per cent while Ford Kenya’s Khalwale scoops a mere 13.1 per cent whereas Jubilee Party’s Mabel Muruli who is making a second stab at the county seat trails Khalwale at 1.1 per cent.

The research company, however, advised governor candidates to tap into undecided voters, whose number is still high. Infotrak business development manager Mary Mburu said 900 respondents were interviewed in Uasin Gishu, 1, 000 in Mombasa and 1, 800 in Kakamega. The survey covered all the sub-counties and wards in the three counties.
