Trump ‘didn’t know about kin’s Russia meeting’

Washington, Wednesday

US President Donald Trump’s son has said he did not tell his father about a meeting with a Russian lawyer who said she could help his election campaign. Donald Trump Jr told Fox News the meeting was “just a nothing” but he should have handled it differently.

He released emails showing he had welcomed an offer to meet the lawyer, who allegedly had Kremlin ties and material damaging to Hillary Clinton. US officials are investigating alleged Russian meddling in the US election.

Since he was elected, President Trump has been dogged by allegations that Russia tried to sabotage Clinton’s campaign. He has denied any knowledge of this and Russia has also repeatedly denied interfering. Asked by Fox News’ Sean Hannity if he had told his father about last year’s meeting, Trump Jr said: “No. It was such a nothing.

There was nothing to tell. “I mean, I wouldn’t have even remembered it until you started scouring through this stuff. It was literally just a wasted 20 minutes, which was a shame.” In retrospect, he would have done things a little differently, Donald Trump Jr told Fox News, but he defended his actions.

“This is before the Russia mania, this is before they were building this up in the press. For me this was opposition research, they had something you know maybe concrete evidence to all the stories I’d been hearing about.”

Yesterday, President Trump took to Twitter early Wednesday to defend his eldest son, saying the man was “innocent” amid a furore over emails that further fuel speculation over Moscow’s role in the 2016 White House election.

Donald Trump Jr released emails Tuesday showing he embraced Russia’s efforts to support his father’s presidential campaign, admitting he would “love” to get dirt from Moscow on Hillary Clinton.

“My son Donald did a good job last night,” the president tweeted, referring to his son’s interview late Tuesday on Fox News. “He was open, transparent and innocent. This is the greatest Witch Hunt in political history. Sad!” -BBC/AFP
