Kenya will have a new representative in the 2018 Confederation of African Football (CAG) after Ulinzi Stars were eliminated in the GOtv Shield round 32 at the weekend.
Ulinzi were the country’s emissaries in the continental event this year, where they were bundled out by Smouha of Egypt in the second round. The army side exited the CAF Cup honourably, losing 4-3 on aggregate to the Egyptians and were tipped to revisit the competition.
But Ulinzi’s hopes were dashed as Sony Sugar threw the spanner in the works, beating them 1-0 at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru with the only chance remaining for the former being winning the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) to participate in the Africa Champions League.
So competitive were the weekend’s GOtv fixtures that five of them had to be decided on post-match penalties. Besides Ulinzi, it was a frustrating weekend for Gor Mahia who bade farewell to the tournament following a 6-5 post-match penalty loss to Bandari.
Like Ulinzi, Gor have their hopes on playing at the continental level pegged on winning the league. Defending champions Tusker are still in the running for honours after they edged out NSL side Palos FC 1-0 at the Kinoru Stadium in Meru to set up an easy round of 16 date with Thika sub-county side Butterfly FC.
Jackson Macharia scored The Brewers lone goal in the first half. Butterfly got easy passage to the pre-quarter finals after their opponents, Mwatate United, failed to turn up for the match. In the meantime, Sofapaka ran off 1-0 winners over Wetern Stima to book a date with Kariobangi Sharks in the round of 16.
