Rude awakening for newcomers as NPCA league resumes

It was not the welcome they anticipated but new kids on the block Obuya Academy got a baptism by fire when they were routed for 313 runs by Kanbis SC as the Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association Super League resumed at the weekend.

Hosts Kanbis showed their intentions early in a match that witnessed three centuries scores from Rakep Patel, Vinod Rabadia and Dhiren Gondaria who were in imperious form. Obuya Academy had only set a score of 131 all out against the marauding blue shirts who put together a staggering 444 on the board.

The opening pair of Patel and Gondaria combined for a 226 scoreline inside 20 overs. Aveet Desai broke the partnership by bowling out Patel who left with a fine 65 of 125 and moments later, Gondaria followed him on 105 off 68 balls. However, their input of 29 boundaries and 12 sixes was enough to shake them.

The bowling of Kanbis was impeccable especially from Nischay Kerai’s delivery as he amassed four wickets off 12 overs with only 14 balls and the newcomers had few answers in their stable even with the experienced Obuya brothers in the roster.

Meanwhile, Swamibapa ran out comfortable winners as they beat lowly Cutchi Leva by 121 runs at the latter’s backyard. There were two half tons from Kenyan batsman Alex Obanda (59) and veteran Lameck Onyango (58) leading the charge.

Despite starting poorly, Swamibapa held their own in a furious return during the second innings. Cutchi Leva had quickly collected wickets including two that only garnered one run as the Swamis begun feeling the heat.

James Ngoche on 30 starred with the ball and also picked three off 22 balls. Elsewhere, 2017 NPCA champions Stray Lions beat returnees Sir Ali Muslim Club by 195 runs. Shem Obado led by 80 runs with his brother Nehemiah Odhiambo contributed 38 runs. Sir Ali fell apart and only posted 87 total in 23.3 overs.
