A Kiambu independent senatorial aspirant surprised Jubilee nominees when a crowd cheered him during a roadshow in Gatundu, Kiambu county, on Saturday. Karungo wa Thang’wa, the outgoing Ngewa ward MCA, who is seeking to unseat Senator Kimani Wamatangi, appeared at a campaign caravan organised by Jubilee’s Mbele Iko Sawa team at Kiambwangi in Gatundu South when hundreds of enthusiastic supporters demanded that he addresses them.
Thang’wa, a former radio journalist, was invited to address the crowd by area MP Moses Kuria to the thunderous applause in the occasion also attended by Kiambu Jubilee governor seat nominee Ferdinand Waititu, Women Rep aspirant Gathoni wa Muchomba, Murang’a Women’s Representative Sabina Chege and Kiambaa MP Jude Jomo.
Kuria asked the youthful aspirant to greet the residents but told him not to ask for votes since it was a Jubilee event but the crowd would hear none of it. The aspirant was given a standing ovation by the crowd, perhaps, signifying the tough battle mainstream party candidates should brace for from the independents.
Wamatangi was not in the caravan. Thang’wa went for independent ticket after losing the Jubilee ticket to Wamatangi who got 206,282 votes with Thang’wa garnering 178, 814 votes.
