How to kick back, relax and vacation at home

Maya Hayakawa

Who doesn’t like the idea of drifting away, without the daily worries and day-to-day responsibilities of our normal lives? But the reality is getting away during holidays for a much needed vacation is an costly expense that many cannot afford.

Anywhere from restaurants, hotels, travel agents, and flight expenses; travel costs can quickly go south especially for a family. But this doesn’t mean you don’t get to have your well deserved break.

How about a ‘Staycation’ as an option? This is essentially a vacation in your very own backyard. If planned well and infused with creativity, a Staycation can be more than just a week off work at home.

It can be a time of unlimited fun and great relaxation for you and your family. It might even be more satisfying than going out on a trip which ironically, at the end could end up winding you up even more because of all the added stresses in planning the trip, coupled with the financial strain it comes with.

If I have not already convinced you to consider a Staycation, maybe these ideas on how to plan a staycation might do so!

First things first, if this is going to be a true Staycation you have to get rid of anything that reminds you of the daily grind.

Consider taking all the clocks off the wall, put away all electronics and do not check your emails! People will be more likely to contact you if they know that you’re in town, so if you can, don’t tell them that your vacation is actually a staycation!

Part of the fun of a vacation is exploring new places, experiencing new cultures and of course enjoying good food! You don’t have to travel all the way to Venice for that kind of experience, why not create that experience in your own town.

Use the time to visit museums, tourist attractions or places that you would never ideally go to on a normal basis. Splurge and go out to restaurants that you have never been to.

If you prefer to stay in, why not have dinner delivered to you every night from your favourite restaurant? Remember that just like any other vacation, to make the most out of your free time, planning is key.

If you cannot afford the luxury of spending a full day at the spa, why not create your own ambience in your house.

You can have a spa day right in the comfort of your own home. There are flexible health professionals specialising in physiotherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture and other relaxation therapies who would be more than happy to bring their services to your door step.

Why not enjoy the great outdoors in your backyard? How often do you use your backyard anyway? A Staycation might be the opportune time. Set up a tent, have your sleeping bags and enjoy marshmallows by a fire.

Whatever activities you choose to do, the whole point of a Staycation is to relax! Sit back, forget about all your troubles and worries and just enjoy life! Be committed to being free, and interrupt your daily routine. And that’s how you have a staycation in style!
