Against all odds – Bishop Kariuki says Yes I do

How did you meet?

Beatrice: We met in April 2015. We were neighbours and both members of a WhatsApp group for people living in the neighbourhood. Nick got my contacts from the group, we started talking and became friends.

A few weeks after we met, I was admitted in hospital with a back problem that had affected my legs. I couldn’t sit, stand, walk or carry out my daily activities normally.

He would visit me at the hospital daily without fail. Even after I got discharged, he continued to visit me to check on how I was fairing.

He really stood by me as a friend throughout the period I was unwell. We started dating on May 13, 2016 and got married on May 13, 2017, exactly a year later.

What qualities drew you to each other?

Nick: Beatrice’s love for God is one of the things that attracted me to her. She is also humble, kindhearted, generous, caring and intelligent.

She is passionate about God, our relationship and her job. Beatrice: Nick is selfless, kind, loving and genuinely caring.

He is also someone I can talk to and easy to get along with. He’s intelligent and above all, I love that he is someone I can pray with and seek God together with.

How was the proposal?

He proposed on November 29, 2016, six months after we started dating. A month prior, I had developed Bell’s palsy, a condition that left the left side of my face temporarily paralysed.

I couldn’t blink, raise my eyebrow and my mouth was crooked, with only half a smile. Despite all this, Nick decided that he would ask me to be his wife.

On that day, he came to visit me since I had been unwell and brought me flowers, which I thought were probably to wish me a quick recovery. As we talked, he reassured me of his love for me despite the circumstances. He then gave me chocolates and a card that he insisted I read.

As I opened the card and read it, Nick was down on one knee, and right at the bottom of the card I saw the words “please be my wife”. As I read that part, he popped the big question.

How did the wedding day turn out?

Awesome! We saw God’s hand in everything from the tiniest of details. It was over and above what we imagined.

All our service providers went out of their way to deliver beyond our expectations, and gave us more than we paid for. The décor was on point, the food was delicious and the cake was amazing.

What are some of the highlights of the day?

We were blessed to have perfect weather on our wedding day as it had rained the previous day. The décor also stood out. Saying our vows marked the beginning of a lifetime commitment, and that was also a highlight for us.
