Come out, re-elect UhuRuto, Waiguru asks Mt Kenya voters

Former Devolution Cabinet secretary Anne Waiguru has expressed fears of voter apathy in Mt Kenya region during the August 8 General Election.

She said even if voters in the region have a fanatical following for President Uhuru Kenyatta, it would be meaningless if they fail to turn out in large numbers to vote for him.

She told the electorate that mere love for the President would not translate into votes unless they cast their votes in earnest like the other regions have vowed to do.

“We must ensure all registered voters turn out on August 8 and not leave anyone at home whether sick or in hospital since this will be a do-or-die contest,” she said.

Speaking at Kangaita Tea Factory, the former CS who is also the Kirinyaga Jubilee governor’s candidate vowed to take campaign vigorously for the re-election of President Uhuru.

“At the county level, things may be okay but our main concern is at the presidency because of the tight competition between Jubilee and Nasa and we must therefore, intensify our campaigns to narrow the gap in our favour,” she said.

She said it would be the saddest moment if they failed to turn out to vote in big numbers as registered should Nasa take over the leadership of the nation.

“Should Nasa win due to voter apathy in the region, you should then be prepared to be in the Opposition forever, and you know how it feels to be in the political cold,” she said.

At the same time, Waiguru reminded her opponent, Martha Karua, that her new found support for Uhuru and his Deputy William Ruto was suspect.

She wondered how a leader like Karua, who was allegedly crucifying the two during the 2013 general election at the International Criminal Court, was now a crusader for their re-election.

“What has changed so suddenly six months to the general elections that she now supports Jubilee top leadership unless she has a hidden agenda?’’ posed Waiguru. The aspirant said leaders should always weigh their words before they speak to avoid being haunted by their utterances later. Ends
