Crowd favourites Asbel Kiprop and Faith Chepng’etich will join over 900 athletes set to spice up the Safaricom National Athletics Championship from today to Saturday at the Nyayo National Stadium.
The two are among elite athletes that have confirmed their participation, hoping to defend their titles with competition between Kenya Police and Kenya Defence Forces expected to be fierce.
Both Police and KDF are expected to field their best track and field athletes during the three-day event. Also to watch out for is the Prisons team, which is among the 16 Athletics Kenya-affiliates expected to battle it out for a chance to secure a spot on the national team that will represent Kenya at the 2017 IAAF World Championships to be held in London in August.
The event will feature disciplines such as 3,000m steeplechase, 5,000m, race walking, javelin, shot put, triple jump and pole vault. The national championships, which follows the conclusion of the team selections last weekend, is expected to unveil fresh talent this time round, as some of the biggest names in Kenyan track and field will be missing in action after transitioning to road races.
