The concept of using Sh50 shillings to become an instant millionaire may have been hard to fathom over two years ago but now its true, thanks to Kenya’s leading lottery Lotto which has made this a reality for many.
Quite an alien idea when Lotto was first introduced in the Kenyan market in November 2015, a time when sports betting was the only way know to turn ordinaries into overnight millionaires, the lottery has minted 134 millionaires and 16 multi-millionaires with another lucky Kenyan claiming the mega Jackpot of Sh100million recently.
After nine draws, Cleophas Pedha became the first millionaire, landing Sh3.2 million and the number has been growing ever since. The latest addition to the list is Margaret Kiiru who bagged Sh1 million in last week’s draw at a time when she was experiencing a cash crunch leading to a frustrating slump in her avocado business.
Njeri was named the 134th millionaire during the lottery’s 143rd draw. She had opted to play via raffle and lady luck finally smiled her way as the odds turned out in her favour on the March 18 draw.
“This is not just a monetary but a spirit boost too. This means I can be debt free now and focus on expanding my business. Two of my five children will comfortably get into tertiary education now and I couldn’t be happier,” said an elated Njeri.
With further education, she hopes her children will assist her in her business endeavours and also shoulder the responsibility of raising their siblings. “I am looking to jointly establish a family home rather than continue renting,” added the Nairobi resident, who has made a living as a fruit vendor specialising in avocados.
Other winners of the night were Harrison Kamau who won Sh100, 000, Joyce Okero (Sh75,000), Rebecca Jepchirchir, Nehemiah Njeru, John Mwakina, Jane Wanjiku, Rosemary Chebet, Jane Njoroge, Purity Kithinji, and Dewitt Njeru who all won Sh50,000.
