National women rugby sevens team Lioness has recalled three of its players for the African Championship set for Zimbabwe.
Lionesses skipper Kate Abila, her Mwamba clubmate Sinaida Aura and the pacy Menengai Cream Homeboyz’ winger, Cynthia Camilla return to a newly-reformed side under a new coach Kevin Wambua ahead of Africa Cup Sevens Championship slated for September 17-18 in Harare, Zimbabwe.
The team’s coach recalled the services of the three his side named for the eight-nation tournament that will see the Lionesses who recently finished 11th in the Rio Olympics fight for African title despite South Africa’s Lady Boks’ threat.
While naming his squad yesterday, Wambua admitted the threat South Africa posed in the knock-outs maintaining his first goal will be to top up their Pool B which comprises of Kenya, Tunisia, Madagascar and Uganda to avoid meeting with them in the Cup semis.
“In 2014/2015 we were the runners-up to them but the good thing about us this year is that we have had plenty of exposure playing in France, Rome and the Olympics. Playing against the world’s biggest teams has been a boost for us and we gained a lot from the competitions.
This time round we seek to top our pool first to avoid meeting them in the cup semis so as to meet them in the finals with my players psyched up,” said Wambua.
Lionesses were Africa’s representatives in the women’s rugby sevens competition at the recently concluded Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil after South Africa women’s team declined to take part in it even after beating Lionesses 31-7 in the qualifiers finals played in South Africa.
