Nairobi politics played out during the dissolution of New Ford Kenya (NFK) event with a number of legislators throwing their weight behind Water CS Eugene Wamalwa for Nairobi governor’s seat.
MPs Stephen Kariuki (Mathare), James Gakuya (Embakasi North), Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete) and Isaac Mwaura (Nominated) endorsed Wamalwa to face Cord’s Governor Evans Kidero in the 2017 contest.
Kariuki’s endorsement of Wamalwa, according to pundits, is a confirmation of a behind-the-scenes political deal between the CS and former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru. Wanjiru is mother of Kariuki, who has also announced he will defend his Mathare seat on the Jubilee Party ticket.
It is widely speculated that Wamalwa and Wanjiru will unite with either of them deputising the other in bid to clinch the seat. Six other aspirants, including Senator Mike Sonko, Nominated MP Johnson Sakaja and Dagoretti MP Dennis Waweru have also expressed interest in the seat on JP ticket.
Former Speaker Kenneth Marende and city businesswoman Esther Passaris also plan to contest for the seat. Also in the race is former aide to Raila Odinga, Miguna Miguna who will be an independent candidate.
