Are preventable disasters our politicians’ stock-in-trade?

Disasters provide an opportunity for politicians to make political hay. They breathlessly rush to the scene where a great deal of real and crocodile tears are shed, condemnations made, handouts dished out and photo opportunities sought.

There will be the public-funded mass funerals where they get another opportunity to make some more hay. If we didn’t know better, we would think leaders ensure there is a steady supply of disasters for the sake of their careers. And how would they achieve that? Keep the roads in an awful condition, let raw sewage flow, encourage the breaking of the law… If leaders think this is a harsh assessment, they should prevent disasters by doing their work.
