University expansion plans put on hold

The Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (MPDB) and the Commission for University Education (CUE) have denied Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (Mmust) a licence to start a medical school this year.

Kakamega county medical advisory board chairman Stanley Khainga said MPDB and CUE inspected the Kakamega Provincial General Hospital and resolved to delay the application to allow the authorities equip the hospital to the required standards.

The hospital, which has been capped by Mmust for practical work, is yet to be supplied with medical equipment for specialised services required of a referral and teaching hospital. It also lacks specialists in various fields.

Addressing the media after chairing the hospital board meeting, Khainga said CUE and MPDB had recommended for an upgrade of facilities and hiring of experts before a medical school is approved.

“There are certain requirements the university and hospital must meet before approval. Further, the board insists on certain standards for a referral and teaching hospital,” he said.
