Kenyatta University won the inaugural Nyeri Sevens rugby tournament after beating their arch-rivals Kenya Methodist University (Kemu) in a thrilling game at Kabiruini showground. KU won the finals match after beating KeMu 12- 0 in one-sided match watched by many rugby fans.
En route to the finals KU beat Karatina University 50-0 while KeMu had beaten Marshals 17-0. Following the win KU bagged Sh100,000 while Kemu were awarded Sh50,000. Speaking during the event county officials led by youths and sports secretary Lucy Wanyitu Mugure and who were the main sponsors said that the event had showcased Nyeri County as a tourist destination.
Wanyitu said that for a start the event which was not highly attended was a success and had succeed in introducing the game of rugby to Nyerians who are known for producing athletes. ‘’To us the event has made us proud since the youths are not feeling neglected and at the same time domestic happiness among couples has been harnessed we will ensure that this is an annual event,” said Wanyitu.
However fans were few and as such there was no business. While launching the tournament Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Development Officer Nills Achayo said the Kenya Sevens national team and their coach Benjamin Ayimba were in attendance in a bid to source for young players.
“We will be looking out for young talented players so as to ensure that this region embrace rugby as a sport,” said Achayo. Twelve teams from local universities and companies participated in the two-day event among them KeMu, Karatina University, Kiambu, Dedan Kimathi University, Aberdare Rugy FC, Kirinyaga University College, Thika, MKU, Kamrose and Nanyuki.
