Guardiola ends Kenyan visit with round of golf

 Nairobi, Monday

Celebrated football coach Pep Guardiola enjoyed a round of golf at Nairobi’s Karen Country Club at the weekend to conclude his Kenyan Safari before flying out of the country.

The Bayern Munich coach who in 2008 became the youngest manager to win the UEFA Champions League with Barcelona, could not avoid the attention of many local football followers even though his week-long Kenyan visit was strictly to holiday with his wife Cristina Serra and children Maria, Marius and Valentina. But he was full of cheer and informality as he mingled with Kenyans.

He played a four ball golf match with Karen Country Club members Lawrence Kiambi, FG Kariuki and club’s honorary treasurer Allan Wainaina. Guardiola had earlier visited the Maasai Mara Game Reserve where he had flown to immediately after arriving in Nairobi.

At Karen, he was received as one of the most famous visitors to the club ever. Karen Country Club is home to the annual Kenya Open golf tournament, a European Challenge Tour event. The club sits on a scenic 400 acres in Nairobi’s western suburbs and is an iconic championship course, one of the best in the world.

The outgoing Bayern Munich manager went straight to Masai Mara on landing at JKIA aboard the Emirates flight from Dubai. The last week has seen a surge in tourist numbers in Kenya on what industry pundits believe is the lifting of travel advisories by French, American and British governments.
