More than 700 striking health workers in Kirinyaga stormed the County Assembly on Saturday protesting an alleged move by members to divert funds meant for their promotion and buying drugs in 2015/16 budget.
Led by the branch secretary Simon Njeru, the rowdy health workers forced their way through the assembly, forcing police to intervene. And fearing for their lives, MCAs escaped through the rear gate.
The health workers accused the Assembly and the county government of being insensitive to residents needs. Waving placards and chanting anti-county slogans, the medics also staged demos on the Kerugoya/Karatina road, causing a traffic snarl-up. The strike enters its second week today.
