Nairobi sides register mixed results

Green Sharks and Kenyatta University triumphed in their respective weekend Hockey Premier League matches held at the City Park Stadium. In the first match of the day, Wazalendo were ruthless on visiting Mombasa Sports Club with a 4-0 rout. Mombasa had previously been defeated by Kenyatta University 1-0 in the only match played on Saturday.

Joseph Mwangi struck Wazalendo’s first through a successful field goal just eight minutes into play. Kimanzi Fidelis scored another field goal 12 minutes later to extend their lead. Nelson Shilaku scored from a penalty two minutes shy of the first-half to extend their lead to 3-0.

James Mwangi closed the scoring chapter with a penalty goal four minutes second-half resumption. Strathmore University were brought down by the pacy Kenyatta University 4-0, all goals courtesy of thrilling field goals. Shadrack Ruto’s two goals alone were enough to seal their victory.

Ruto scored two goals in a row starting with the opener, twenty two minutes into play and another field goal five minutes later. The other goals were scored by Kelvin Barasa in the 42nd and 47th minute respectively. In the final match of the day, Green sharks left no stone unturned in their only match against KCA University.

Just like Kenyatta University, Sharks did not rely too much on penalties but capitalised on field play to score field goals. They over-run KCA’s defence thrice to net in their three field goals. Leon Magomere scored a brace, straight from the opener with a field goal.

Magomere scored his two goals in the sixth and 21st minutes respectively. Samuel Mucheke did the honours of sealing the victory with the third goal in the third minute of second-half play.

In the other matches played over the weekend, Sliders thrashed Mombasa Sports Club ladies 4-0 in the only ladies national league played over the weekend. Karate lads were too hard on Impala in the only Hockey National Men’s league played. Karate descended on Impala with outstanding six goals to win the match 6-0.
