Kiprop’s hat-trick seals seven-star show

The highly charged ‘Mashemeji derby’ between historical rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards lasted just 63 minutes before fan trouble forced its abandonment as the teams tied 0-0.

The aftermath of the chaos left scores of fans from both sides injured. Journalists and police officers were also not so lucky. Property around Nyayo Stadium, the venue of the match were also destroyed.

Hell broke loose when centre referee Peter Nduati awarded Gor a spot kick after Leopards skipper Jackson Saleh handled the ball inside the box as he attempted to clear a dangerous cross from Abouba Sibomana.

Leopards fans started throwing objects into the pitch in protest of the decision and matters got worse when police fired teargas to a section of the crowd. A Leopards club steward who drew a machete in the confusion was beaten senselessly by Gor stewards and it took the intervention of police officers to save him from probable lynching.

The two sides had played a barren first half which Gor Mahia were unlucky not to have found the back of the net as they wasted a glut of chances. Meddie Kagere had the ball in the net three minutes into the match but was ruled offside before Michael Khamati forced a diving save out of Gor custodian Boniface Oluoch a minute later.

The league leaders then took total control of the match, forcing Ingwe to in their own half but failed to crack their opponents’ disciplined defense marshaled by Saleh, Martin Kizza, Edwin Wafula and Eric Masika.

Kagere nearly broke the deadlock in the 13th minute when a tantalising cross from Innocent Wafula fell on his head but the 36-year-old Ugandan failed to steer the ball past Lucas Indeche in Leopards goal.

The league’s second highest scorer Michael Olunga also missed three attempts as K’Ogalo piled pressure on their opponents. Sensing danger Ingwe coach Zdravko Logarusic made an early substitution sending on former Gor winger Timona Wanyonyi in place of the Patrick Kagogo in the 36th minute.

The change failed to spur Leopards into life and it was Gor who came close in the 43 minute with Olunga’s shot parried by Indeche for corner. The resultant corner was another missed opportunity for Gor as Kagere failed to connect with Innocent Wafula’s cross.
